Experience Is The Best Form Of Education

Experience teaches you about the real things in life. You can learn a few things when you read or observe things from afar. However, the true form of education come with the real-life experience. I remember my days in juniors class, how I had so much wanted to be the Senior Prefect of the school. So, I made it a point of duty by always watching how the previous Senior Prefects dressed, conducted themselves and implement school's rules to ensure law and order. In my mind, I said to myself that the work of a Senior Prefect was a piece of cake, and I would be able to do good job of it if I ever had the opportunity in my time in NOWA. As fate would have it, in February/March 2020 I was appointed as the Senior Prefect(Boys), a dream come through. I said to myself, I got this covered, it was going to be a walk in the park. I had no idea what to do, apart from my long fantasies of wanting to be a Senior Prefect.

Within two weeks on the job, I started getting negative feedback about my performance as the Senior Prefect. Some naval personnel even told me I was lousy, that I am not properly taking charge of the junior students and that I was the worst Senior Prefect they had come across in their time here. In fact, I became frustrated, and it started taking a toll on me. I started having doubts in my ability to lead and if I am the Prefect the school desired. There were so many "whys" going through my head, why this position? Why not any other post, why am I not meeting up with all the expectations that comes with being a Senior Prefect.

How did you cope with the challenges?

I concluded that the comments I received from classmates, teachers and the Naval Officers were meant to demoralize me and they did. However, following some counselling and advise about my leadership style, I came to realize that they wanted me to succeed, be firm and lead as I should be as NOWA's goal is "Excellence" in everything we do.

How did you feel when doing your duties as a Head Boy?

I had to adjust and tried to do what was expected of me by taking my responsibilities more seriously. Gradually, I started making necessary changes and I got positive feedback and commendations from the school House Masters, Teachers and can you believe it, the Commandant. I was even given a nickname, though I still get some criticism, but took them in a positive way. I realized that life is nothing but just a series of learning opportunities and experience.

In addition to performing duties and collaborations with other prefects, you’ve handed over a great position to the next Head Boy. What are some of the values you’d advise him and other prefects to attain in successful running of the school activities?

The responsibilities that come with being a Senior Prefect, the challenges and experiences had help me identify my strengths and weaknesses. I had learnt not to ever underestimate the position of leadership, as it was not possible, I could have known all about the expectations at a very young stage. And that is why over time, we all learn of things that we need and it is known as experience. I advise them to be able to learn from their mistakes and adapt to changes that are required for the growth of the school.

Now, it is important to remember that experience can be good or bad. However, both kinds of experiences are required in life to make sure that we succeed in life and do well. In some ways, the experience is actually th best teacher. It is up to you to make the decision to make the best of the lessons. as I did during my time as a Senior Prefect(Boy).

What does it mean to be a prefect?

With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility! Being a prefect requires great leadership skills and being able to control does under your care. Try to live an exemplary life that will also transform the life of the young ones looking up to you. Prefects don’ give up when challenges come their way, take every step with a brave move and most especially do learn from your experiences.

Conclusions

I have seen in my time as a Senior Prefect that we don’ have a look far for inspiration and that we each have the potential to make an inspiring contribution to others, by being true to our values and committing ourselves to lofty goals of excellence. Thank you.
